THE POSSESSION OBSESSION OF COCOA VITAKO:
OCTAVIA COOK
17th FEBRUARY - 7th MARCH 2012
"A falcon’s hood crafted from gold and set with gems sits, locked out of reach, in a vitrine at De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. A rock crystal carafe engraved and adorned with gilded silver beading is so inexplicably ornate its ceremonial purpose remains a mystery. A clutch purse, designed by the late Alexander McQueen, has a handle made from rings that would catch the eye of a magpie. Welcome to the private world of Cocoa Vitako wherein the unfulfilled desire for these objects manifests in an ache so wide the would-be consumer is subsumed by an obsession with possession.
But just who is Cocoa Vitako, at once intimate and distant, and where are the visual clues that unscramble her identity?
Ms Vitako asks only that you look closely and see how a possession obsession might be eased, for the time being anyway.
The Possession Obsession of Cocoa Vitako brings together a small suite; only six pieces plus photographs make up this collection, that draw from a bank of images collected over a lifetime and made up of those things Ms Vitako most wants but can never own".
