"Materials like acrylic, formica, textiles and threads, among others, lend themselves so well to illustrate my love for mid-20th century design (architecture, furniture, textiles, domestic objects etc). I love the quirkiness of that period, and the sense of fun that went into all of those areas as well as the readiness to experiment with new materials, processes of manufacture and mass-production. One of the fun aspects for me is working with bright colours instead of only silver and incorporating materials, shapes, textiles and patterns that echo that era.
Often within my pieces I make use of my childhood experience with domestic crafts such as sewing, embroidery and textiles, giving them a singular appearance, while the acrylic elements of many of my brooches are often laser-cut (making use of contemporary industrial 'mass-production' process). I enjoy playing with the concept of ‘mass-production’, and playing it off against the ‘one-off’ (or almost ‘one-off’) aspect of each piece as well as creating a mix of the domestic and the industrial". |
